To me, traffic management is such a big part of proper city planning that this new SimCity seems like a bad joke to me. In cramped inner cities, where road space is tight, many roads will be one-way, and strategically placed speed bumps and other hinderinces will direct through-traffic away from residential areas. Along almost all busy traffic arteries that have a bus route, the bus will get its own bus lane, which is also allowed to be used by emergency vehicles.
Along freeways and main roads you'll see dynamic congestion information displayed in real time, complete with suggested alternate routes, and during rush hour some lanes on urban highways are able to switch direction using moveable barriers depending on the direction of the heaviest commuter flow. All traffic lights have traffic detection systems and larger roads have cameras and traffic counters that influence a weighted green-light priority system, all of them managed from a central control room. Being from The Netherlands, I know no better than that all traffic management systems are smart and dynamic systems.
